Alternative Mud Tyres - Geax Datura - Review

by John Lee
I have been using the tyre for around 2 months solid - thanks to our beautiful English Autumn/Winter. Geax supplied me with a Pair of Datura tyres front tyre being 2.20 and the rear being a 2.00. Weighing in at 790g for the 2.00 and 890g for the 2.20 - This makes the tyre lighter than many of its competitors on the market. For example, my old friend the Maxxis Wetscream has a weight of 1160g in 2.20. I was already questioning if the Geax Datura tyre may have sacrificed strength for weight - only time would tell on this. Let's also not forget the price comparison as you can pick up a pair of Geax Datura for around £30 in the wire version! Bargain!

The Datura - 2 months later

For the geeks like me and parents reading this, the tyres have a DH 2 ply casing and a sticky soft compound with micro cuts on the knob tops to enhance contact surface where optimum grip is essential.

My first date with this tyre was at The Descent Gear race in Moelfre, Wales. I was eager to get these on and my dry specialists - Geax Neuron off, as the rain over the night had settled on the loose and off camber track making it trickier to handle with a more subtle tread tyre. This was to be the first and a true test for the tires.

First impressions, out of the box the tyres were doing great and handling the varied types of terrain, although they were digging really, really deep into loose corners and skipping slightly on the slippy rock sections. But after my first run down I let a few more PSI out of the tyre just to soften the blow of the very rigid cutting tyre tread. With this slight alteration I seemed to have tamed the beast enough to keep all the grip and soften the impact of the grooves and increased a faster roll - equaled more control!

The next test for The Geax Datura was in the lake district up Setmurthy Common - I had never ridden here before and in all honesty I was feeling doubtful that the tyres would hold up to much on the wet roots that were in abundance here. After a few drop ins and no problem lines over some nasty polished roots, I began to find much more trust in my hedgehog rubber styled friends and a confidence boost as I settled into the fact these tyres stick like glue in wet conditions, shed any unwanted mud and roll with ease thanks to its clean areas for positive traction! Proper PSI for a given course is a must too as those roots would have schooled me had I run higher PSI in the tyres.

Sure enough though they were gripping amazingly on what I feared most, and they were handling the boggy hillside with little to no problems at all. I feel that to really get the most out of these tyres you need to spend some time juggling with the PSI and learning that its a game of trust.

I have become a real fan of my Geax Datura and I am sure we will spend more time over the next few months together due to the winter weather us Brits are made tougher by. Geax say the following about the Datura - From Mud to Hard, cornering with this tyre, is confidence inspiring

I completely agree! See you on the hill - or you`ll see me hiding in it - john lee

Nice review. Would be interesting to know how this compares to the Wet Screams, especially cut down, as that is a very popular choice for messy conditions...

The tread pattern is uninspiring, but I suppose that the massive distance between the knobs would definitely help keep the mud from clumping up during runs. Also the weight is quite nice for a tire of this caliber.

I ride every other day minimum - ask my friends and see my video diary

it looks good because it's not a really long spike. makes sense since most racers cut their wetscreams

I agree with seraph, but sometimes simplicity is a good thing. especially with tires. obviously this tire is not going to be a top-seller other wise more people would be riding it. I think it is a good choice if you don't have a lot of dough and want to avoid the wetscream. I personally hate the wetscream.

ye i have some fresh treads heading my way, looking forward to trying some new dh tyre patterns, ye the Datura's a good tyre, never got on that well with the dhea.
  • 2 1
no center knob = no straight line braking
  • 1 1
Most DH tires don't have a center knob.
  • 2 1
and most dh tires are shit! there are some with a center knob: comp24/16, high rollers, excavators... all good tires. Minion DHR's don't and they are scary running down a steep straight chute.
