Uplift - The up`s and downs

Apr 16, 2010 at 14:45
by John Lee
Uplift events and the transport provided at races are become more and more interesting wherever you go. For example you may have sat on Dave Pearce`s Tractor trailer with bikes on top racked and the riders stowed away underneath or maybe you have been rattled to death on Farmer Jacks rollercoaster uplift at Moelfre or have you sampled Martins superb uplift at Llangollen where your bike gets a seperate journey to the top on the tractor while the rider gets a mini bus to the top.

But how many broken mech hangers and scars on your frame should a rider endure? And what should we expect from an uplift you pay for?

Scars from a recent uplift on the top tube

After a recent race event I was sick and tired of hearing the moaning from all the lads about the state of the uplift and the fact we had paid to use it and them taking our money knowing we were putting bikes on it worth up to £3,000. However I didnt really care until my 3rd uplift when my mate pulled his bike off to discover his Hope lever had been torn out of the brake lever socket leaving it useless to ride until we partially zip tied it to his handlebar. Then when I get home and wash my bike I discover the scars in the pictures shown on my Haro X7 - I wouldnt mine but I didnt even crash and course these marks - gutting!

As we travelled the uplift for the rest of the day we began questioning riders about their thoughts on this terrible system of leaning our bikes on each other and asked what uplifts they were used to. Many of the riders shared about the racking system at Cwm Carn and how impresssive and simple it is. Then I shared about my encounter with Martins scratch free uplift at Llangollen which he explained was designed to keep riders happy and their machines in mint condition.

How much abuse should we expect our bikes to take from an uplift? What should be the minimal expectation when we turn up to an event to protect our bikes and riders?

I will leave the ball in the pinkbike readers court and let you decide with your comments what is sufficent to protect our bike and keep it in good condition when using these money making uplifts!

The Moelfre stacking system means you better be using helitape and not mind scratches on your bike

whats wrong with the uplift vehicles with out bike racks to have a pile of off-cut carpet pieces to drop between the bikes , problem solved?

I love racing and riding moelfre... but i don't know if i'll go again as i think the only part of my bike that hasn't got a mark from the uplifts is my stancions, thank F***. the metalwork needed to put a removable frame to the back half of their trailers would be an easy job and not cost a great deal, even if it made the next entry fee more for everyone to cover the costs it would be well spent. With the long que at the last race there we saw one bloke who just pushed up all day, he got to the top faster than waiting in the que and didn't get his bike smashed in by the shite service. with the likes of the uplift scotland service, cwncarn, pearce etc theres no excuse in my opinion.

The Only uplift that I have every been happy with is the CWM DOWN system, never damaged my bike on it Smile - note I have never tried the Llangollen Uplift. I think that our bikes should be treated well, would you take you car on a ferry if they stacked the on top of each other? I think not - A.A.

take a look at the ukbp uplift system/trailer... amazing and even more space efficient than cwmcarn

i wish people would just man up! theres helitape for scraches. and i hope that wasent a dig at farmer jack, because he is a ledgend!

no dig at farmer jack, i met him briefly at the last race (Jumble who i was camping with grew up over the hill from him and knows him well) and i'm not fussed by the paintwork... however, a break lever torn out of the socket prior to a run i can do without! as for those unlucky enough to have had their stancions ruined, that's just too much. nearly everywhere nowdays has a service sorted out and designed to carry the bikes, why not moelfre? i know a heap of guys from the club i organise who refuse to go even for an uplift day because they'd rather do an uplift thats not on a shonky old trailer.

went along to an uplift with a friend of mine a few weeks ago, at Nant Gwytheryn in North wales, he ended up with a 2 bent levers on his new hope tech levers, and a bent hope floating rotor on the rear

Both my bike and Becky's (Hilton) bike took a fair old beating at the Borderline race at Moelfre in April. And I heard about and saw even worse damage to others bikes. One of Becky's fellow female riders had an appauling scrape down her fork stantion, to the point where it was damaged beyond repair...you can't tape or protect stantions unless you use pipe lagging and then where do you store it on the way down???
With the spiralling cost of uplifts and races, where is the investment in transport for both bike and rider?
Previous to Moelfre we did go on an uplift at Bringewood with Pearce Cycles. I think that system of bike racking above and riders below is significantly better than the 'chuck everything/everyone on a sheep trailer' approach.
UK Bike Park have an impressive system using several ex-military vehicles with multiple custom-made bike supports on each bike truck (like rollercoaster harnessing but for bikes) and the other trucks carry the happy riders...much can be learned from those guys!

It is cr*p getting your bike damaged on an uplift - especially as the solutions are relatively cheap and simple. Why shouldn't we expect a quality service for our money? You wouldn't stand for it in other areas of life.

Probably the main reason Cwmcarn is one of the busiest uplift services? I admit I love the courses at Caersws and Moelfre but the uplift puts me off and we tend to use Cwmcarn most.

Cwmcarn is the most popular because it's on the M4 and basically a trail centre, plenty of business from weekenders coming from London etc.

if i was at a uplift and it looked like my bike would get scratched, i would
1, push up so i at least get a ride
2, never go there again until sorted out

Cannot be that hard to sort out, as i am sure they are making money.
Cwm Carn is the best on i have been to so far.

BTW i am doing the Mega as well, whats the gondolas like out there?

This is simple. Minimum expectation is that your bike will not be damaged and if it is the provider of the up lift pays for it. Good luck with that but if afyer an event the riders with damaged rides went so far as to go to court for compensation a few things would happen. Cheap ass bastards would stop promoting events where their incompetence and/or lack of care damages expensive bikes. Organisers would build proper racking systems and likely increase event costs. You as a user consumer can get the ball rolling by simply not participating and paying for uplifts that wreck bikes. Ask to see the bike transport system before paying and if it is crap don't pay for it. Hammaerschmidt or a manual shift inner ring, no front DR, solves the problem too. Riding up will increase your fitness and improve your DH/FR riding ability.

Unfortunately it simply doesn't work like that over here (I presume you are from Canada?. UpliftR/Race entry costs are already bordering on prohibitively expensive for a lot of people. I seriously don't think there's a problem, as long as people take care when stacking you never get any breakages, it's simply due to lack of care when loading - I can tell you now my brake levers are nowhere near anything that will break them when I stack it! It's a downhill bike, it should be ridden and ridden hard. A lot of the people that attend uplift days are weekend warriors that rarely ride, so their bikes are pretty immaculate and then a lot of complaining over some scratched lowers, mine have more scratches in from rocks and crashes than from uplifting.

i care about my bike i cant afford to just go out and buy new one. bikes should be looked after thats what puts me off the molefry uplift the bikes rattle all over the place. people who dont care have to much money other wise they would care for there bikes and compline to the organiser

I don't have too much money, I just get on with riding and take a sensible attitude to cosmetic damage - a respray at the end of the year costs £30. Get over it.
  • 1 0
were do you get your resprays for £30 they must be AWESOME lmao
  • 1 0
lol im in that picture and yes they ant the best off uplifts that was a good run up there was one time when they where all hanging off
  • 1 0
hey fella's this is my idea www.pinkbike.com/photo/4909301 the albun's full of pics of it, just need wheels and a tow hitch now and its away!
  • 1 4
They need to be vertical to be efficent. Im not to bothered about it. Its only a bike. It was money, but i swapped the money for a bike. When you race downhill bikes get beat up from the riding side just as much as uplifts.
  • 2 0
but they last longer if you miss out the damage caused on an uplift... and limit the damage to when you are enjoying actually riding the bike!

langollen uplift looked to be the best but i dont know if they use it for big events and races?

Yeah thats the gay thing bout uplifts. But last time i did a uplift it got dark and I still had 2 more uplifts left. Dam u winter!
